{
"query": "osmosis"
}
Osmosis is the movement of water molecules from a region of higher water potential (a dilute solution) to a region of lower water potential (a concentrated solution) through a partially permeable membrane.
Example: put a slice of potato in a strong salt solution. Water leaves its cells by osmosis, so the slice goes soft and loses mass. In pure water the opposite happens: it takes in water, goes firm and gains mass.
Exam tip: name all three: water molecules, the water potential gradient and the partially permeable membrane.
- Find two numbers that multiply to 2 × (−3) = −6 and add up to −5. They are −6 and 1.
- Split the middle term: 2x² − 6x + x − 3 = 0
- Factorise in pairs: 2x(x − 3) + 1(x − 3) = 0, so (2x + 1)(x − 3) = 0
- So x = −½ or x = 3
Check x = 3: 2(9) − 15 − 3 = 0. It works.
